How to Shock a Pool

Shocking your pool may seem difficult at first, but with this step-by-step information and a little practice you’ll get the hang of it in no time. Before shocking a pool yourself it is recommended that you refresh your knowledge on handling pool chemicals by reviewing the Sustain® chemical treatment overview on this website

While using the Sustain 3-Part Chlorination System, Energizer tablets provide routine shock protection in addition to replenishing the Sustain Shield chlorine extender. Occasionally, you may also choose to shock your pool with Sustain granular calcium hypochlorite (Cal Hypo) shock to rapidly raise the free chlorine value in your pool.

Shocking with granular Cal Hypo starts with easy-to-use 1-lb. bags of Sustain Shock Treatment from your authorized Sustain Dealer. Sustain shock is a quick-dissolving granular product.

When to Shock Your Pool

Times when you may want to shock your pool with granular product for more rapid release of chlorine include when opening your pool, after a large rainstorm, the night before your pool experiences a large irregular bather load, or the day after a similar event.

The best time to shock a pool is after the sun goes down with nobody in the water.

Pool Shocking Safety

Please remember to handle your pool shock chemicals with care. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s label directions and adhere to all warnings! Never mix chemicals before adding them to the pool. Additionally, after a chemical has been added to the pool, allow that chemical time to disperse and dilute before adding the next.

Always add a chemical to water, never water to a chemical.

Before handling pool shock chemicals, make sure to wear a long sleeve shirt, tennis shoes, and pants you would normally use for yard work or chores that you wouldn’t mind getting dirty.

Properly store all pool products in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible products like grease and oils and out of the reach of children. If you have any questions about storage or handling, that are not covered on the product label, ask you Authorized Sustain dealer.

Pool Shock Treatment Instructions

Test your pool water to ensure that you have all of the necessary chemicals ready before proceeding with treatment. Wear personal protective equipment, e.g., gloves, goggles, long-sleeve shirt, before handling any chemicals.

For best results, adjust your water’s pH to 7.2 before applying Sustain Energizer tablets or Sustain granular shock treatment. With the pool pump running, evenly distribute the granular shock product as per the manufacturer’s label directions. Getting the best distribution of chemical is important. This can be achieved by keeping the pump running for at least 12 hours per day; and especially while energizing or applying Sustain granular shock treatment. As a general rule, wait 2-to-4 hours after shocking your pool for the water and chemicals to balance. Then, use test strips or a DPD test kit to check the chlorine content. Do not enter the pool until free chlorine (FAC) level reads 1-3 ppm.
